How to Air Up Gooseneck Surge Air Coupler?
Gooseneck Surge Air Pressure:
This is a LOW-PRESSURE hitch, that works by tow resistance.
Set air pressure at approx. 5 psi, then test drive.
Increase pressure in 5 psi increments until optimum results are found.
Typical air pressure range is 5 – 15 psi.
Note: When towing heavy trailers or trailers with high wind resistance it may be necessary to increase air pressure in the Shocker.
Maximum Pressure: Do not exceed 100 psi in the air bag, as it may damage the air bag.
Maximum weights for Shocker Surge: Towing capacity = 24,000 lbs Tongue = 6,000 lbs | Tow Capacity is 30,000 lbs for Wallace Forge Coupler
Safety Notice: The Shocker Hitch is a heavy-duty unit, however, it is imperative that any weight capacity ratings are not exceeded on the ball that is mounted on your tow vehicle, or the Shocker Hitch. Use only a 2 5/16″ dia. Ball. V-19 rated. Do not exceed G.V.W.R. of ball being used.
Gooseneck Surge Diagram
Installation
Take a vertical measurement from the bottom of the ball coupler tube to the bottom of the trailer frame sleeve. This dimension will be used to set the Shocker Gooseneck Surge Trailer Hitch
Remove pins or loosen locking bolts on the trailer frame sleeve, and remove the existing coupler tube.
Slide Gooseneck Surge Shocker Hitch insert tube inside the trailer frame sleeve with the air bag toward the rear of trailer.
Hold or support Shocker at vertical measurement noted in Step #1. This should duplicate the previous ride height of the trailer. Shockerhitch must be properly aligned, (parallel with trailer), to maximize its benefits.
Note: If your trailer coupler tube is equipped with a pin or pins, the correct pin location must be marked in the Shockerhitch insert tube and have a qualified machine shop drill / machine the pin holes.
Torque locking bolts to your trailer manufacturers’ recommended specifications. A spacer kit is available for some applications.
Lubricate: Oil the coupler shaft, grease coupling ball socket, and grease the hitch ball to REDUCE WEAR AND IMPROVE SHOCKER ACTION. Main pivot grease zerk should be greased periodically for maximum bushing life. ( Simply, you cannot over-grease it! )
Hook up the trailer by simply lowering the coupler onto the ball. (Handle will snap open & shut automatically). To release trailer: Pull handle up and hold while raising trailer.

FAQ
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions on the Gooseneck Surge
How do I know the Gooseneck surge with fit my gooseneck trailer? There are two things you need to know. What kind of stem your gooseneck trailer has and what kind of ball your pickup has. You can also find the hitch you need by using our Gooseneck Trailer MFG guide.
What is the Gooseneck surge tow rating? 30,000 lbs towing capacity with Shift Lock coupler for 2-5/16″ ball / 7,000 lbs tongue weight & 40,000 lbs towing capacity with 40K goose air with Shift Lock coupler for 3″ ball. With a 30k Shift Lock coupler its 30,000 lbs towing capacity & 7,000 lbs tongue weight.
How long will the airbag last? Our airbags are an industrial bag and will last for years and years. They are similar to truck airbags but have been beefed up internally for our towing applications.
Is there a way to lock the Gooseneck coupler? Yes, we do carry a gooseneck coupler lockspecially made for our surge hitch as well as a stem set bolt lock. You can check those out here: https://shockerhitch-vip.md-staging.com/product/sl-gooseneck-coupler-set-bolt-locks/
Can you really install the Gooseneck Surge in a couple of minutes? Yes check out the install video.
How much air do I put in the gooseneck surge air hitch? See air pressure video in install tab.
What do your mean when you say straight or angled / slotted pin holes? We are wondering if your gooseneck stem has holes that are straight across OR if it is slightly angled 10-30 degrees, where the stem hitch pin is off set or at an angle. Below is a picture of an angled stem, which we would use a stem with slotted holes to fit this angled pin. See our gooseneck stem selection guide.
Will it work with my flat bed pickup with recessed in a flatbed pocket? Yes, see install tab and fitment guide for recessed ball.
If I Order a gooseneck surge air hitch & coupler, what all comes in the box? Includes a complete replacement gooseneck stem, surge air hitch system & coupler along with clear-cut installation instructions. Literally you can install this in 2 to 5 minutes.
How long will it hold air? This is a sealed system that will hold air for weeks or months. If you haul the same trailer with the same load weight, it should be good for quite some time.
How often do I grease it? The grease does not just lube the pivot; it also keeps water and dirt out. You cannot over grease it, once every few months should do it.
How does the air ride work? The air shocker is like a teeter totter. One end is an air bag, a pivot in the middle, and a ball at the other end. This gives a “pillow” effect at the ball end.
How much does an Shocker gooseneck surge weigh? The Gooseneck Surge Air Hitch & Coupler weighs 93 to 100 lbs depending on the model.

Qwhat is the difference between 30k coupler & 30k coupler 9”forward
AThe 9" forward will move the hitch forward so it helps with really short beds that have an issue with the turning radius while towing a gooseneck. If you do not have that issue, you would want the standard 30K coupler.
What kind do I need for my pj trailer? I hold about 25k but I see it says something about square or round

APJ Gooseneck trailers can either have a round or square stem. You would need to look at your trailer and identify the stem shape, size and pin hole style.
7 reviews for Shocker Gooseneck Air Hitch & Coupler for PJ Trailer
I drive some of the worst highways in the country towing a 40 ft. Hauling oilfield equipment and this is a game changer.
– Jeff Dugan
I couldn’t believe the difference in the ride with the shocker hitch installed. I hated pulling my 24 foot flatbed, before. The trailer jerked and pounded my truck, constantly. With the new hitch, I could barely feel the trailer was there. Great product, good people to deal with, well worth the money.
– William Stark
After hearing about the shocker I thought it was just another sale pitch, so I figured I’ve wasted money before on all kind of things so maybe just maybe I might get this one right. And “Bingo” this was money well spent. Thank you shocker for not wasting my money….
– Mark Smith
At this time all I have done with my new shocker hitch is test my 32′ goose-neck trailer with no load on it other than the trailer itself. I set the air bag at 15 lbs , driving with just the trailer there is a noticeably smoother ride. Before the shocker hitch this particular trailer , empty ,would jerk me around to the point where I dreaded using it. Looking forward to testing it out with a full load , when I do , I’ll get back with complete review.
– David Henry
Being a hot shot trucker, this gooseneck air hitch really makings towing big loads easier. Smooths out the truck and trailer.
– Dave’s Hauling Service
A great addition to my PJ trailer. An awesome product to take the jerk out of Your pickup and it feels like You don’t have a 32 foot trailer loaded behind You.
I recommend it for anyone who has a trailer and hauls heavy loads.
